How to open a .epub file

Quick, free ways to open EPUB on any system.

A .epub file is a Electronic Publication. If double-clicking does nothing, your computer simply does not have an app that reads EPUB yet. Here is how to fix that on each operating system, using free software wherever possible.

Open a .epub file step by step

  1. Confirm the file really is a .epub. Drop it into the WhatFileType file identifier, which reads its signature without uploading anything.
  2. On Windows, open it with Calibre or Edge.
  3. On Mac, use Apple Books or Calibre.
  4. On Linux, try Calibre or Foliate.
  5. Still stuck? Convert the .epub to PDF, which opens more widely.
