How to open a .mxf file
Quick, free ways to open MXF on any system.
A .mxf file is a Material Exchange Format File. If double-clicking does nothing, your computer simply does not have an app that reads MXF yet. Here is how to fix that on each operating system, using free software wherever possible.
Open a .mxf file step by step
- Confirm the file really is a .mxf. Drop it into the WhatFileType file identifier, which reads its signature without uploading anything.
- On Windows, open it with DaVinci Resolve or Adobe Premiere Pro.
- On Mac, use DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro.
- On Linux, try DaVinci Resolve or VLC.
- Still stuck? Convert the .mxf to mp4, which opens more widely.

Frequently asked questions
Why can't I open my .mxf file?
Almost always because no installed app understands MXF. Install one of the apps above, or convert the file to a format your existing software already reads.
How do I play an .mxf file?
VLC plays most MXF flavours. For editing, import it into DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro or Final Cut, which read the professional metadata too.
Why does my MXF footage come as many separate files?
That is OP-Atom, used by Panasonic P2 and Avid: video and each audio channel live in their own MXF files. OP1a puts everything in one file instead.
