What is a .indd file?
Adobe InDesign Document · Design · Adobe · 1999
An .indd file is an Adobe InDesign document, the working file of the industry-standard page-layout program. It holds the full layout of a magazine, book or brochure, with text, images and typography.
What is a .indd file used for?
InDesign is used for print and digital publishing, so .indd files carry precise multi-page layouts. The format is proprietary and version-specific: a document saved in a newer InDesign may not open in an older one.
To share a layout with people who lack InDesign, export to PDF. For editing on an older version, save as IDML, InDesign's interchange format.
What opens a .indd file?
The .indd format opens in the following apps, grouped by operating system. If one app does not work, try another from the same list.
Windows
- Adobe InDesign
- convert to PDF/IDML
macOS
- Adobe InDesign
- convert to PDF/IDML
Linux
- No native option; use PDF export
Open a .indd file step by step
- Confirm the file really is a .indd. Drop it into the WhatFileType identifier, which reads its signature in your browser without uploading anything.
- On Windows, open it with Adobe InDesign or convert to PDF/IDML.
- On Mac, use Adobe InDesign or convert to PDF/IDML.
- On Linux, try No native option; use PDF export.
- Still stuck? Convert the .indd to pdf, which opens more widely.
Why can't I open my .indd file?
Almost always because no installed app understands InDesign. Install one of the apps above, or convert the file to a format your existing software already reads. If double-clicking opens the wrong program instead of nothing at all, the file association is set to the wrong app rather than the file being broken.
The other possibility is that the file is not really a .indd at all. Drop it into the file identifier to check it by its bytes instead of its name. Nothing is uploaded.
How to convert a .indd file
You can convert a .indd file to pdf, idml, epub using a conversion tool or the export menu of an app that opens it.
InDesign has no fixed magic number, so there is no signature table on this page. Its bytes alone do not prove the format: identification relies on the extension, the structure of the content and the program that created it. The magic-numbers reference lists the formats that do carry one.
Frequently asked questions
What is a .indd file?
An .indd file is an Adobe InDesign document, the working file of the industry-standard page-layout program. It holds the full layout of a magazine, book or brochure, with text, images and typography.
How do I open an .indd file without InDesign?
There is no full free viewer. Ask for a PDF export to view the layout, or an IDML file to edit it in a compatible program.
Why won't my .indd file open?
Usually a version mismatch: files from a newer InDesign will not open in an older one. Have it saved down to IDML, or to your version.
How do I convert InDesign to PDF?
In InDesign, use File then Export and choose Adobe PDF. That produces a shareable file anyone can open.
