Apple MPEG-4 Video · Video · Apple · 2005

M4V is Apple's variant of the MP4 container, used for video sold through the iTunes Store and for podcasts. It is structurally almost identical to MP4; the extension mainly signals that the file may carry Apple's FairPlay copy protection.

Is a .m4v file safe to open? Safe. M4V is media data, though a store-bought file may be DRM-protected and tied to your Apple account.

What is a .m4v file used for?

M4V is Apple's variant of the MP4 container, used for video sold or rented through the iTunes Store and for podcasts. Structurally it is near-identical to a standard MP4 holding H.264 video and AAC audio.

The main reason it exists as a separate extension is FairPlay DRM: iTunes historically used .m4v to flag video that could carry Apple's copy protection, tying a purchased movie to the account that bought it.

A DRM-free M4V, such as your own video exported by an app, plays in exactly the same players as an MP4, and simply renaming the extension to .mp4 is usually enough for a player that is picky about the name alone.

Its ftyp brand, the four-character code that identifies which exact MP4 variant a file is, is 'M4V ' (with a trailing space), one of the codes registered with the MP4 Registration Authority.

What opens a .m4v file?

The .m4v format opens in the following apps, grouped by operating system. If one app does not work, try another from the same list.

Windows

  • Media Player
  • VLC
  • iTunes

macOS

  • QuickTime
  • TV app
  • VLC

Linux

  • VLC
  • mpv

Web

  • Most modern browsers

Open a .m4v file step by step

  1. Confirm the file really is a .m4v. Drop it into the WhatFileType identifier, which reads its signature in your browser without uploading anything.
  2. On Windows, open it with Media Player or VLC.
  3. On Mac, use QuickTime or TV app.
  4. On Linux, try VLC or mpv.
  5. Still stuck? Convert the .m4v to MP4, which opens more widely.

Why can't I open my .m4v file?

Almost always because no installed app understands M4V. Install one of the apps above, or convert the file to a format your existing software already reads. If double-clicking opens the wrong program instead of nothing at all, the file association is set to the wrong app rather than the file being broken.

The other possibility is that the file is not really a .m4v at all. Drop it into the file identifier to check it by its bytes instead of its name. Nothing is uploaded.

How to convert a .m4v file

You can convert a .m4v file to MP4, MOV using a conversion tool or the export menu of an app that opens it.

What is the .m4v file signature (magic bytes)?

A .m4v file carries the hex bytes 66 74 79 70 4D 34 56 20 at offset 4, which read as ftypM4V in ASCII. Programs identify M4V by those bytes, not by the filename, so a renamed file still gives itself away.

These are the documented signatures for M4V. For a full breakdown, see the MP4 file signature page.

Frequently asked questions

What is a .m4v file?

M4V is Apple's variant of the MP4 container, used for video sold through the iTunes Store and for podcasts. It is structurally almost identical to MP4; the extension mainly signals that the file may carry Apple's FairPlay copy protection.

What is the difference between M4V and MP4?

They are the same container format under the hood. Apple used .m4v mainly to mark video that could carry FairPlay DRM for iTunes purchases and rentals; a DRM-free M4V behaves exactly like an MP4 and can usually be renamed to .mp4 without any conversion.

Why won't my M4V play outside of Apple apps?

If it was bought or rented from the iTunes Store, it may still carry FairPlay DRM that ties playback to your Apple account and devices. A DRM-free M4V, like one exported by an app, plays fine in VLC or any other MP4-capable player.
