What is a MIME type?
A MIME type, or media type, is a short label like image/x-icon that names a kind of data. It has two parts separated by a slash: the general category (image) and the specific format (x-icon).
The point of a MIME type is that it does not depend on a file's name. A web server sends it in the Content-Type header so your browser knows how to handle a download, email attaches it to each part of a message, and file tools use it to decide what a file really is.
