What is a .pages file used for?
Pages is Apple's answer to Word, part of the free iWork suite. A .pages file bundles the document as a package; on the Mac it is even a folder shown as a single file.
The catch is compatibility: Windows has no native Pages app. The usual fix is to export to Word (.docx) or PDF from Pages, or open the file through iCloud in a browser.

Why can't I open my .pages file?
Almost always because no installed app understands Pages. Install one of the apps above, or convert the file to a format your existing software already reads. If double-clicking opens the wrong program instead of nothing at all, the file association is set to the wrong app rather than the file being broken.
The other possibility is that the file is not really a .pages at all. Drop it into the file identifier to check it by its bytes instead of its name. Nothing is uploaded.
