A RAR archive starts with the ASCII text Rar! then a control byte sequence. Version 4 ends the signature with 07 00 and version 5 with 07 01 00. Comic-book .cbr files are RAR archives and share this header.
What this magic number means
A magic number is a short, fixed run of bytes at a known position that tells a program what a file really is, no matter what the filename says. If a file starts with the bytes 52 61 72 21 1A 07 00 (the text Rar!...), it is a RAR file.
Signature variants
RAR appears with more than one byte pattern. These all identify the same family:
